Mitchell McLaughlin took his first win of the season on the opening race weekend last Sunday in Navan when he crossed the winning line by himself in the Cycleways GP A2 event. In a race that took it's toll on the bunch due to the harsh arctic conditions, only the strongest and hardiest were able to complete the race. Mitchell had been in action the previous day in Annaclone where he was unfortunate to puncture while in contention for a good finish. He put all this behind him and powered to a great win to take the flag. The image of him crossing the line was reminiscent of Nibali's finish in the snow a few years ago at the Giro. This result was well overdue and hopefully there's more to come for Mitchell who now moves into the A1 ranks. Fellow FMCC club riders weren't as lucky on Sunday as Mark McGinley punctured after 7km and Donal Walsh was one of the many non-finishers due to the wintry conditions. The next outing for Mitchell and the FMCC riders is the John Haldane Classic next weekend, hopefully they all can build on this early success.
